Iin Lukio

The Municipality of Ii

Ii is situated in northern Finland by the Gulf of Bothnia, 40 km north of Oulu. The current population is almost 10000. Two rivers, the Iijoki and the Kuivajoki flow through Ii. Ii was a major trading place as early as the 14th century. Nowadays we are a part of a larger economic area around Oulu. The name Ii comes from a Lappish word meaning 'a place to rest, a place to spend the night in'.

There are 120-160 students and about 20 teachers at Ii Upper Secondary School. Most of the teachers also work at the Upper Comprehensive School. The school year is divided into five periods. A student chooses at least 75 courses (1 course is 38 lessons) for his individual curriculum. Everybody studies both English and Swedish and you can also choose German, French or Russian. We also offer an introductory course in Latin as well as a variety of other optional courses. Upper secondary Schools in Finland are non-graded, i.e. a student can graduate in 2-4 years. International Connections

Internationalism is one of the things we focus on at Ii Upper Secondary School. We have had several international contacts over the years and many projects have been carried out successfully. There's always something going on and new plans for the future are being made.

Our current partner is Baktay Ervin Gimnázium.  Is situated by the Danube, about 25 km south of Budapest, Hungary. We have been involved in co-operation projects since 1995. At the beginning, our theme was UNESCO World Heritage program focusing on local history and culture. Over the years, we have worked on many different themes and organized a lot of student visits. We really look forward their next visit in February 2012.

You can find more detailed reports of our international projects by clicking on the links under "International contacts" on the left hand navigation on the page.
